Last week I got to hang out on my home turf! I shot Cara and Steve's wedding at The Exchange Conference Center on the Boston waterfront. We were all a little concerned about the looming threat of thunderstorms, but such is wedding season in New England. Cara and Steve, laid back and sweet as they are, didn't let it ruin their day.
We did a first look and took a ton of photos before the ceremony. We managed to dodge the storms, save for a few minutes of downpours when we stopped to take some group photos at Christopher Columbus Park in downtown Boston. It was definitely an even trade off for that soft, awesome, cloudy day light that helps create a dreamy feel in the portraits.
I spent the whole day absolutely losing my mind over the details of this wedding. Cara and Steve did such an amazing job personalizing things and creating a day that was unique to them. Cara wore a gorgeous Hayley Paige gown with a flowy, bohemian looking skirt and a more ornate, edgy, art deco inspired bodice. Meanwhile, the bridesmaids broke all the rules (highly encouraged) and each wore a short white dress of their choosing.
I had the pleasure of meeting the ladies of Lovely Things Floral, who not only designed the bouquets and boutonnieres, but created a custom installation piece at the end of the aisle by hanging individual roses from the ceiling with fishing wire. I’m a huge sucker for art installations in any context, and I think theirs was the first floral installation I’ve ever seen at a wedding. Can’t wait to see what they do next!
It’s also important to note that Cara and Steve booked Keytar Bear to play their cocktail hour. Keytar Bear is easily the most well known busker in the city and has become kind of a staple of the Boston experience. If you frequent the Common or ride the MBTA, you’re probably well acquainted with his work. He was the perfect addition to their downtown wedding, which somehow managed to be perfectly elegant, vintage inspired, industrial, and urban, all while maintaining a classic New England feel.
By the time the reception rolled around, it was clear that Cara and Steve knew how to throw a party. Despite all of the beautiful details, the most important part of throwing a party is, of course, the company. The genuine ease of the love and friendship between Cara and Steve set the tone for the day and made it one their friends and family won’t soon forget. Congrats, guys!
